YesChef programme spearheads cuisine-led approach

Compass Group New Zealand (Compass) released its culinary YesChef programme to the aged care sector, in a move to surprise and delight village residents at mealtimes.

YesChe was launched at Auckland-based Selwyn Village to clients and key stakeholders, who were treated to a live theatre-style cooking demonstration and tasting session. Caswell House care home residents were also treated to a cooking presentation and provided with a meal.

YesChef is inspired by Compass’s chefs’ passion for cuisine and love of cooking good, wholesome food. The programme aims to take existing menus and elevate them for residents, by taking a culinary-led approach to refreshing menus and dishes for residents.

“We’re incredibly excited about YesChef. Mealtimes are such an important part of a resident’s day and food services plays a large role in that. We want every single meal, every single day, to be a positive, memorable experience for the residents we serve,” says General Manager Senior Living & Private Hospitals Rob Prior.

“While we do need to meet robust nutritional standards within Senior Living – as we cook and prepare food for some of New Zealand’s most vulnerable people – this does not mean flavour or presentation have to be compromised.”

While many residents already enjoy their meals, Compass wanted to ensure that in addition to being well-fed and cared for, residents received “something extra special”.

“Compass is always looking at new ways of doing and / or improving how we do things. YesChef is part of this approach as it’s a super opportunity to provide residents with something new.

“Led by Culinary Lead Greg Peckowski, YesChef is inspired by our chefs’ passion for cuisine and love of cooking good, wholesome food. Greg has reviewed menus and old favourites and added a modern twist to surprise and delight residents.

“Selwyn residents really loved being part of the launch and tasting session and we received lots of positive feedback. They said it was fun, creative and interactive – much like cooking a special meal!”

Selwyn Village Manager Heather Dillon adds, “The YesChef programme is a breakthrough for the retirement village / aged care sector. It is the first time I have seen residents so enthusiastic and engaged in eating. Food is only nutritious if it is eaten… and all the plates were empty.”
