Graduate pursues cookery dream

FRESH produce, family and ‘foodie’ tendencies motivated Mars Petcare Catering Assistant Hannah Cairncross to achieve her Professional Cookery Diploma, from Wanganui Universal College of Learning.

Hannah began working for Compass Group New Zealand (Compass) in Wanganui as a casual employee in 2016. This experience inspired Hannah to explore study options to further her career in cooking and baking; today she is part of the Compass permanent employees team.

“I have worked for Compass at Mars Petcare for about eight months now and I’m loving it. I work with talented chefs, who are very kind, and the crew members are great also.

“Working at Mars has increased my knowledge about certain foods and having Site Manager Scott as a hands-on manager has really helped me improve in the way I manage my day-to-day working life,” says Hannah, adding that in addition to her team, her family are a huge inspiration.

“My Mum is a great cook and my Dad has always grown delicious, fresh produce for us to use in dishes at home. My great-aunt is also a chef; she has always encouraged and supported me along my journey.”

Hannah has always wanted to have her own business making cakes in bakery setting – this may be the first step towards achieving her dream.

“I was born and raised in Wanganui and I think it’s a great town to live in, so this may be where I set up my dream business one day!”

In her spare time, Hanna likes to spend time with family and friends, reading and – of course – cooking.
