Christchurch enjoys ‘theatre style’ food

Tasty, hot, fresh and modern food prepared in real-time by our Medirest Christchurch Hospital team.

Medirest New Zealand’s new ‘theatre’ live food preparation service at Christchurch Hospital has got off to a roaring start, selling out within 30 minutes on Day One.

“Our Medirest team introduced ‘live’ food preparation to The Great Escape café, as we wanted to create a different and enjoyable food experience for our customers,” says Medirest Retail Manager Nick Abernethy, adding that other Medirest public health sites are exploring this as part of their retail offerings.

“Our people prepare the food in front of customers on the day, based on different themes. On our first day, we made up 100 hot roast beef rolls and quickly sold out. On the second day we made up 150 meals, which also sold out! We’ve increased the meals to 200 each day and never have any leftover meals – people really like the fun approach to food preparation, while also getting great value for money.”

Other ‘theatre’ meals include: Chef’s Choice (Monday) such as vegetable kumara parcels and spicy, aromatic curries; Asian Flair Flavours (Wednesday); Taco Thursdays; and Great Gourmet Burger Fridays.

The busy café is open to both hospital employees and the public and serves a variety of high-quality café style meals including fresh sandwiches, nutritious wraps and crisp seasonal salads.

“We are proud of our food at this café and often get compliments on the quality and variety of food provided. We are always exploring ways to provide an overall food experience, while being responsive to customers’ feedback and suggestions.”
